So the thought of watching a play in another language without subtitles might be daunting for some – but not our students!
We have been lucky this year to bring enrichment opportunities to our MFL students, in the form of a play. Designed to be easy to follow, with lots of visual gesture and slower speech, the aim of the play, was to bring a ‘beyond the classroom’ experience to our students – and to show them that they actually understand more than they think.
In the morning we had the French play “Les Garçons”, attended by years 8, 9, 10 and 11 students, which was the story of a disastrous evening of babysitting or also known as “What could go wrong went wrong!” There were a lot of laughs and audience participation was expected and our students didn’t disappoint, getting fully involved with the production – no mean feat when there were over 200 students in the room.
In the afternoon a smaller groups of years 9, 10 and 11 students got to see a German production called “Das Schlimmste Hotel” – a story of miscommunication, intrigue and again, a fair bit of slapstick!
A good time was had by all and it was pleasing to her from students about how much they were able to understand – something that surprised them, which will all go towards building the confidence of our youngsters to continue their learning journey in a subject area that is, after all, all about communication.
Expectations will therefore be very high when we get the opportunity again in March, when our students will watch a play in Spanish, called “Primera Cita”.
